For more than a generation, the Cinémathèque québécoise has been a special place to gather and appreciate film. This year Montreal’s museum of moving images is celebrating 50 years of existence.

Founded on April 18, 1963, the Cinémathèque has not only shown thousands of films, but preserved them as well. It’s mission is to preserve and promote the world’s audiovisual heritage, with an emphasis on Quebec and Canadian works as well as international animation.

As its web site points out, the Cinémathèque’s holdings are extensive: “These include over 40,000 films and videos from all over the world and all periods plus 30,000 television programs, as well as collections of various types, such as 28,000 posters, 600,000 photographs, 2,000 early film devices and equipment, 15,000 scripts and production archives, 45,000 books, 3,000 periodicals and thousands of files on diverse subjects, along with other artefacts, props and costumes that help illustrate the different subjects featured in the Cinémathèque’s public screening programs.”
