Canada’s Coast Guard will be getting almost two dozen new ships. Although most of the proposed vessels will be under 50 metres in length, the value of the contracts will be major at up to $488 million.
The 18-21 vessels will include search and rescue lifeboats, near-shore fishery research vessels, mid-shore science vessels and channel survey and sounding vessels.
In making the announcement today in the east coast port city of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Defence Minister Peter MacKay says the work will go to small and medium size shipyards that were not selected to build vessels as part of the national shipbuilding procurement strategy for the Navy
The new vessels are to be built over the next seven years and will replace existing vessels.
