Flooding scuttles some events at Calgary Stampede

Catastrophic flooding in the western province of Alberta has forced the cancellation of some events at the iconic Calgary Stampede. The ten-day rodeo, exhibition and festival is held every July and this year starts on Friday.

That’s not enough time to clean up and secure some of the venues. Events like the vintage tractor pull will be cancelled. The penning competition which sees teams of riders separate three cattle from a herd will be moved to the nearby community of Okotoks. The heavy horse show moves from the Saddledome stadium to a large tent.

Stampede officials vowed this year’s event will go on “come hell or high water,” and they appear to be true to their word.
