Until recently it was thought there were only two copies of Canada’s rarest stamp, the two cent “large Queen on laid paper” but the Vincent Graves Green Philatelic Research Foundation has recently come across a third example.
The stamps are so rare because they were printed, perhaps by mistake, on “laid” paper which is usually used for stationary. Printers at the time were transitioning to “wove” paper. They feature a picture of Queen Victoria and date from 1870.
It took months of analysing 12 different aspects of the stamp before it was declared authentic. It’s estimated only between a hundred and 400 of the stamps were ever issued.
