Military tests stealth snowmobile

Those motorized vehicles many Canadians use to zip across the snow are very noisy, but the Canadian military is testing a new model that is quiet and costly. The stealth snowmobile would be used to quietly whisk troops on clandestine operations in the Arctic. Its cost is $620,000 for this prototype.

Not everyone is convinced the hybrid-electric vehicle is worth the price.

“I don’t see a whole lot of evidence that criminals and terrorists are scooting around Canada’s North on snowmobiles and that we have to sneak up on them,” said Michael Byers, a former candidate for Parliament who now teaches international law at the University of British Columbia in western Canada.

“I can’t help but wonder whether they’ve been watching too many (James) Bond movies.”

Average Canadians could be forgiven for wondering whether the stealth snowmobile could be developed for personal use and finally give us a break from all the buzzing in the otherwise peaceful winter landscape.
