RCMP gets first female native division leader

For the first time in Canada an aboriginal woman is becoming the commanding officer of a division of the national police force, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Brenda Butterworth-Carr is a mother of three and a member of the Tr’ondek Hwech’in Han First Nation in the northern territory, Yukon.

Being named the top police officer for the western province of Saskatchewan is a “bit surreal,” said Butterworth-Carr. She joined the RCMP in 1987 as a Native Special Constable and has achieved many firsts over her years of service.
