The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) has announced that the legendary Winnipeg, Manitoba-based rock group Bachman-Turner Overdrive are this year’s inductees into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
After leaving the highly successful Guess Who in 1971, Randy Bachman along with Robin Bachman and Fred Turner and eventually Tim Bachman, created a band called Brave Belt, which struggled and nearly folded.
In 1973, with a new style, the band name changed to Bachman-Turner Overdrive after they found the trucking magazine Overdrive during a roadside stop while on tour, feeling the name reflected their new style.
The band’s powerful driving rhythms led to a successful debut album in 1973. Their second album also in 1973 produced several hits including “Let it Ride”, and “Takin Care of Business”. The latter song has been featured in at least 12 movies, 24 TV shows, and countless commercials.
The third album with more hits went to #1 in 21 countries. More successful albums and singles and heavy touring followed but by 1977, the first of a number of breakups, personnel changes lawsuits, and subsequent reunions occurred until a final dissolution in 2005.
Longest serving Bachman-Turner Overdrive members were Randy and Robin Bachman, Fred Turner and Blair Thornton.
Bachman-Turner Overdrive will be inducted to the hall of fame during the nationally televised Juno music awards show on March 30.
