The musical talent of Canada’s Atlantic Provinces was in the spotlight at the annual East Coast Music Awards which wrapped up a week of activities on Sunday (March 6) with a gala awards show in the city of Charlottetown.
Since the 1990s the awards have celebrated the wide variety of musicians and music of Canada’s four Atlantic provinces, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island.
The region’s strong musical tradition with roots in Gaelic music has expanded to include country, electronic and rock music.
Among this year’s winners, Old Man Luedecke’s album “Tender is the Night” won in the Album of the Year and Folk Recording categories. Jenn Grant won the Song of the Year award for “I’ve Got Your Fire”. The Songwriter of the Year award was won by Dave Gunning for “These Hands”.
Popular Cape Breton singer Rita MacNeil, who died last April, was honoured with the director’s special achievement award.
