A deadly pig virus has killed piglets in Canada and the United States. Feed prices are up and demand is increasing because, once the long winter is over, Canadians love to start their barbecues and cook meat outdoors.
Pork was traditionally the cheapest meat available and there are no affordable substitutes. Prices for other meats have been increasing too.
