Canadians are cool, eh?

On this Canada Day of national celebration, a new survey shows Canadians think they’re pretty cool.

The poll was conducted by the Ipsos-Reid polling agency for Historica Canada- a charitable instiution dedicated to increasing Canadians awareness and appreciation of Canadian History.

Normally seemingly fairly reserved, the survey found that beneath that exterior of modesty lies a seething pool of emotion.

The survey found Canadians think they’re sexy, cool, polite, and proud of their heritage as Canadians. However over 80% feel that we should express more patriotism.

In fact, 89% say they’re proud of their “Canadianess” and 86% are sure there is a “Canadian identity”.

An equal number said that Canada’s diversity is one of the country’s strengths.

When describing fellow Canadians, 92% said they are polite, and 89% said Canadians are cool, and 75% said we’re a sexy bunch.

“Canadians are feeling good about themselves with good reason,” said Anthony Wilson-Smith, president of Historica Canada. “We increasingly measure our identity in terms of who we are rather than how we measure up against others. That’s a very positive step forward.”

In spite of that, Canadian history is a bit of a drawback with 56% not knowing that 2017 marks Canada’s 150th birthday, and 11% don’t know the first lines of the national anthem.

Interestingly only 66% thought Canada was a better place to live now than it was 20 years ago.

Some 1,001 Canadians were surveyed for the poll which was conducted between June 17-19
