The Canadian government is asking Members of Parliament to “recognise that the leadership of the terrorist group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has called on its members to target Canada and Canadians at home and abroad” and to allow the government to send fighter jets on combat missions, and continue the presence of Canadian military advisors in Iraq for the next six months.
In a statement to the House of Commons on Friday (October 3) Prime Minister Stephen Harper appealed to the opposition parties to support the government motion. He also suggested the mission could be extended to Syria if necessary. The opposition parties immediately raised questions, as they have over the current 30 day military mission in Iraq.
On Monday, the government motion will be debated.
