In 1963, Alfred Hitchcock created a frighteninig movie called “The Birds” about a town threatened by an invasion of birds.
In the Atlantic island province of Newfoundland, the menace may not be quite the same, but the invasion is similar.
For some reason, huge numbers of ducks have invaded towns along Burin Peninsula, which juts out from the southern part of the island
Where once the spotting of an occasional duck or two was an interesting sight for residents, now, entire gangs of quacking bullies have recently taken over, and residents say they’re fearless.
Resident Kimberly Cross is quoted by the CBC saying, “They chased me and everything, looking for food. If I’m coming home with my groceries, they’re looking in the bags. They’re chasing me, looking in the bags, like, ‘What do you got for me today?'” She says, “If you feed them, they’re worse. They come back everyday”. She adds that you also have to be careful where you step as there is a lot of “waste”.
She says you can try to ignore them but they’re everyway, on the lawns, in the road, “They’re a nuisance” she says.
Another resident also says the ducks block the roads, and aren’t afraid of the cars. Freeman Collins says, “When they see you coming, they just stands there in the middle of the road. They just stand there and wait”.
Residents who have contacted local authorities have been told there’s little that can be done.
