This Mother’s Day in Canada, brings the good news that single-mother’s lives appear to be improving according to a recent study released by the Ottawa-based Vanier Institue of the Family.
The title says it all: Lone Mothers and Their Families in Canada: Diverse, Resilient and Strong.
According to Statistics Canada, of the 9.4 million families in Canada, 16 per cent are single-parent households, and of these, 80 per cent are led by women.
Nora Spinks, CEO of the Vanier Institute of the Family, a research-education organization, says more dads are actively engaged in their children’s lives these days, and this helps improve the situation for many single-mothers who are often financially and socially better supported.
ListenThe other new developments are the increase in single-mothers by choice. More and more women are having children outside of marriage or a relationship, and they are now in a position to make these choices as they incomes increased by 51% between 1998 and 2008.
