Canadian facts for the country’s 148th birthday

Canada is home to 17 UNESCO world heritage sites and has seven more listed as tentative. This is just one fact noted by Canadian Press ahead of July 1st, Canada’s 148th birthday.

Nine Canadians have travelled to space including Chris Hadfield who was commander of the International Space Station and became famous for singing and playing guitar in space, tweeting messages and fabulous photo of earth, and holding live talks with Canadian students.

Canada’s publicly-funded National Film Board has won 12 Academy Awards. However, its funding has been radically cut in recent years.

Lots of Hollywood stars and the longest border

There are 57 Canadian-born celebrities with stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The world’s longest international boundary lies between Canada and the United States and measures 8,892 km.

“Oh Canada” has been the national anthem for 35 years. It is commonly sung in English or French, or in half of each of these official languages.

There are 308 seats in the House of Commons now, but there will be 338 after this October’s federal election.

There were four Canadian provinces on the day of Confederation. There are now 10 and three territories. Occasionally Canadians talk wistfully about letting the Caribbean nation of Turks and Caicos join the confederation so they could have a warm place to move to, but this is mostly in jest.
