Tuna trophy caught with a rod and reel!

Greer Hunt Jr. shares the only licence to catch Atlantic bluefin tuna in Conception Bay South with his father, Greer Hunt Sr. And they are the only fishermen in Newfoundland allowed to catch them with a rod and reel.

“It reminds me of when I was a little boy with my father fishing”

And what a fish Greer Hunt Jr. caught! His first bluefin tuna weighed in at  322 kilograms, possibly worth as much as $10,000.

But it’s the story!  The 23-year old Hunt said “the fight is unreal.”  He said it took about two hours to finally catch the fish, and he expects his arms and legs will be sore for the next few days from the struggle.

“You’ll gain 100 – 200 yards and the fish will take it right back out, so it’s really a big battle — a tug of war.”

With a quota of a tonne and half per year, the Hunts can also take part in the commercial fishery as well. Greer Hunt Sr. told CBC Newfoundland, that this season has been a good one so far.

“This is the third fish and we have had four hookups in five days,” he said. “It’s great to see them back. It reminds me of when I was a little boy with my father fishing.”

The father and son have a buyer lined up in Montreal for the prize one caught Tuesday. Bluefin tuna are sold both locally and as far away as Japan and Korea.
