Construction to begin on LNG terminal in North Finland
Construction is to begin next January on a liquefied natural gas terminal in Tornio, northern Finland.
The project is a joint venture of a consortium known as Manga LNG, which includes steel maker Outokumpu, its Swedish counterpart SSAB, the Norwegian natural gas supplier Skangass and the Finnish company EPV Energia.
Last autumn the Ministry of Employment and the Economy gave a green light for investment in the planned Tornio LNG terminal project. Now that investment has been secured the joint venture partners say they will begin construction of the terminal.
The facility will be delivered by Finnish power systems company Wärtsilä, which will begin construction at the site near the Tornio harbour in January. The estimated completion date for the terminal is 2018.
The construction phase is expected to employ some 260 workers, and the investment has been pegged at around 100 million euros.
Outokumpu has invested some 30 million euros to transition to the use of LNG at its Tornio plant.
Tornio’s Röyttä site will see the construction of a facility for docking large LNG tankers, offloading and bunker stations, gas evaporators and a 50,000 cubic metre reserve storage unit. LNG distribution will also require the construction of a pipeline network in the Röyttä industrial area as well as a loading area for road tankers.
LNG will be transported to customers in northern Finland and northern Sweden using road tankers or trains. The terminal will also be used to deliver LNG by sea in the future.
