Born August 24, 1922 in Campbellton, New Brunswick, René Lévesque grew up in New Carlisle in the Gaspé region of Quebec. Not quite 14, he found a summer job as a translator and newsreader at the radio station in New Carlisle.  At 19 and 20 he worked in radio stations around Quebec. Then at 22, he was hired by the Voice of America in their search for bilingual journalists.  He is sent to Europe, to cover WWII.
In 1946, René Lévesque goes to work for Radio Canada International where he will host the daily program “The Voice of Canada” until 1951.

  1. My father E.R.Foubert was assigned to be his driver; they got on very well together, as my father was from Ottawa and spoke French. 25 years later he was asked by a third party if he wanted to be his bodyguard but declined the job as it would mean moving our family.
